Anchored in Christ

There is an old hymn that poses a question and an answer:
“Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift, or firm remain?

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.”*

The anchor is a prominent motif in Christian art, for it symbolizes the Christian Faith, a Faith anchored in the certainty of the Risen Christ.  It is a Faith that promises resurrection as a result of choosing to have an intimate union with Christ Jesus, Savior and Redeemer.  Our hope is nourished by the fact that Christ has entered heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father as our advocate.  As the author of Hebrews writes in Hebrews 6:18: “Seize the hope set before us.”

It is by hope that we reach out to the hand that Christ extends to us constantly.  When danger of any kind imperils us, it is in hope that we can reach out to Him, our Anchor, an anchor “grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.”
